Writing to a judge can help you ask for a continuance, request more time, explain a procedural issue, update your address, request a payment plan, or submit a respectful statement. But you need to do it carefully. A judge letter is not the place to privately argue your whole case or pressure the court.
Before you send anything, make sure your letter follows the court’s process, includes the case number, stays respectful, and is served on the other side when required. If you are unsure whether your letter should be filed as a motion instead, review Court Filing Checklist: Avoid Rejection When Filing Without a Lawyer before you submit it.
If your letter involves facts, proof, or exhibits, you may also need How to Write a Declaration/Affidavit for Court. If you are worried about saying the wrong thing, read What Not to Say in a Letter to a Judge first.
Judge Letter Decision Quiz: Find the Right Letter Fast
Use this quick 7 question quiz before you write to a judge. Your answers will help you choose the safest letter style, avoid private one-sided arguments, and decide whether you may need a formal motion, declaration, affidavit, or certificate of service.
Quick Answer Summary
A strong letter to a judge should be short, respectful, specific, and supported by proof. You should state your request in the first sentence, include the correct case name and case number, explain only the facts that matter, attach relevant documents, and copy or serve the other side when required.
You should not privately send the judge a one-sided argument about disputed facts in a pending case. If you want the court to take action, your letter may need to be filed as a motion, notice, request, or court form. When service is required, use Certificate of Service Explained so the court can see who received a copy.

Read This Before You Write to a Judge
1. Do not privately argue the case
If your letter starts with “Here is what really happened,” stop and rethink it. A judge usually cannot consider private one-sided communications about a pending matter. If your facts matter, you may need a filed motion, sworn declaration, affidavit, or properly served statement.
2. Put your request in the first sentence
Do not make the judge search for your point. Start with a clear line such as:
“I respectfully request a continuance of the hearing scheduled for March 18, 2026.”
“I respectfully request a 14-day extension of time to file my response.”
“I respectfully request permission to appear remotely by Zoom or telephone.”
3. Use facts, not pressure
You should sound calm, organized, and credible. Do not threaten, insult, exaggerate, blame the other side, or demand special treatment. Use dates, documents, and short explanations.
4. Attach proof when possible
A judge letter is stronger when your reason is supported by proof. Helpful attachments may include a doctor’s note, employer letter, travel record, payment receipt, school schedule, financial affidavit, completion certificate, or sworn statement.
5. File and serve when required
If you are asking the court to do something, you may need to file the request with the clerk and serve the other party. Use Court Filing Checklist: Avoid Rejection When Filing Without a Lawyer and Certificate of Service Explained before sending anything.
6. Keep the letter short
Most judge letters should be one page if possible. You do not need a long life story. You need the request, the reason, the proof, and a respectful closing.
7. Know when a letter is not enough
Some situations require a motion, official court form, affidavit, declaration, or e-filing portal submission. If you need more time, use Motion for Extension of Time. If you need a new court date, use How to Request a Continuance.

What Judges Tend to Respect Most
You are more likely to sound credible when you:
- identify your exact request quickly
- use dates instead of emotional storytelling
- attach proof instead of over-explaining
- acknowledge responsibility where appropriate
- avoid private one-sided argument
- show how your request helps the case move forward
- follow the proper filing and service process
If you are unsure whether your letter is really a filing, use Court Filing Checklist: Avoid Rejection When Filing Without a Lawyer before you submit it.
What You Should Attach to a Judge Letter
Attach only documents that directly support your request.
Good examples include:
- doctor’s note
- employer letter
- travel proof
- school schedule
- payment records
- receipts
- financial affidavit
- pay stubs
- completion certificates
- declaration or affidavit
- proof of service
Do not attach a huge stack of unrelated records. A short letter with strong proof is usually more useful than a long emotional explanation with weak attachments.
Final Tone Check Before You Send
Before you send or file your letter, ask yourself:
- Did you state your request in the first sentence?
- Did you include the correct case name and case number?
- Did you use a respectful tone?
- Did you avoid arguing the whole case?
- Did you attach only relevant proof?
- Did you serve the other side if required?
- Did you keep a copy for your records?
If any answer is no, revise before sending. You may also want How to Write a Statement Letter for Court if your letter needs to explain facts clearly.
Advanced Checklist Before You Write to a Judge
Use this checklist before you send, file, upload, or mail a letter to a judge. It helps you confirm your request, organize your proof, avoid common mistakes, and prepare your letter for court review.

Section 2: Court and Case Details
Section 3: Letter Structure
Section 4: Tone and Credibility
Section 5: Proof and Attachments
Section 6: Filing and Service
Section 7: Final Review Before Sending
Important: This checklist is general information only. Court rules vary by location and case type. If your request asks the judge to take action, confirm whether you need a motion, official court form, sworn statement, or proof of service before submitting it.
FAQ
Can you email a judge directly?
Usually, you should not email a judge directly about a pending case unless the court’s rules, clerk instructions, or a specific order clearly allow it. You generally need to communicate through proper filing channels and serve the other side when required.
Is a letter to a judge enough, or do you need a motion?
If you want the court to take action, a motion, local form, or official filing is often safer than a casual letter. If you need more time, review Motion for Extension of Time. If you need a new hearing date, review How to Request a Continuance.
What is the best opening line for a judge letter?
A strong opening line is: “I respectfully request…” This tells the court exactly what you want without sounding emotional, demanding, or unclear.
Should you include attachments?
Yes, if the attachments prove your reason. For example, attach a doctor’s note for a medical continuance, an employer letter for work travel, or a financial affidavit for a fee waiver.
Should you apologize in a letter to a judge?
You should apologize when it is appropriate, especially if you missed court, failed to comply, or are writing before sentencing. Keep the apology sincere, brief, and connected to accountability.
Can a family member write a letter to a judge?
Yes, in some situations, especially for sentencing or character support, but it should usually be submitted through the proper process. For examples, use 15 Best Letters to a Judge from Family Members.
What should you avoid saying to a judge?
Avoid threats, insults, private arguments about disputed facts, exaggerations, unsupported accusations, and emotional pressure. Read What Not to Say in a Letter to a Judge before sending your letter.
