When applying for a medical assistant’s job, a good resume with a cover letter is essential. The medical assistant cover letter is the first thing the employer sees and will give him or her a first impression of the applicant.

In some cases, employers decide whether or not they will look at the resume based on the cover letter.

The letter needs to make the applicant stand out from the other people applying for the job. It should describe the applicant’s strengths related to the job and explain why the applicant believes they are a good person to hire.

The job of medical assistant requires certain qualifications depending on the type of medical office. The applicant should have the required qualifications and clearly state them in the letter.

For example, the applicant may have several years of coursework in nursing, an associate’s degree or several years attending a four-year college taking courses that support their qualification. They may also have participated in internships in a doctor’s office, a hospital or other medical facility.

Basic Education

The basic education a person must have is a high school diploma or a GED-pass. They may have a high score on a formal Medical Assistant Exam or a Certificate of Instruction in Medical Assistance. These qualifications can be stated in list form.

The beginning of the letter should be clear and to the point. It should state the name of the applicant, his or her qualifications and work experience. These are the main things the employer is looking for and they should be easy to find.

Express Passion For The Work

The cover letter is not the place to express passion for the work. This can be saved for the interview.

The letter should tell the employer that the applicant is legally able to do the job and competent enough to express as much in a professional way.

Skills and experience should be displayed prominently. It is acceptable to make a list of qualifications because it is easy to read and is a good way to attract the employer to the candidate’s strengths.

For example, the list may be include:

  • Filling out insurance forms
  • Patient screening
  • Medical data entry
  • Pharmaceutical follow-up
  • Admissions
  • Excellent computer skills

The applicant’s previous experience should also be clearly stated. They may have worked in a doctor’s office or with nurse practitioners who can give them a good reference letter.

If they have any specialization such as working in a dentist’s office or an optometrist’s office, it should be mentioned especially if the new office is the same type.

Clear Contact Information

The medical assistant cover letter should contain clear contact information in more than one place.

This makes it easy for the employer to find. It can be included in the opening address as well as the last paragraph.

The letter should also end with an expression of hope that the employer will call the applicant for an interview and a thank-you for their time.

Below is a sample of a medical assistant cover letter. It should be written in formal business-letter style to give a professional impression.

If the applicant is sending several applications, he or she should make sure each cover letter is personalized for the employer or human resources person of the company, hospital or doctor’s office to whom they are applying.

The name of the employer or human resource person should be in the address. If the name is not known, the applicant should call the office and ask for a name.

It is recommended to send the letter by certified mail, so the sender has proof the letter was received.
