Writing an Application Letter for High School [with Sample]

An application letter for high school is typically just like any other application letter you would write for employment. There is some differences, mainly that when applying for an intern position, you probably don’t have a ton of experience like in a traditional job application.

Since you lack in experience, it is important to be enthusiastic and show how you could benefit from working under such a great company program.

Do Thorough Research Of The Company

Do thorough research of the company before beginning this letter. You need to wow them with your knowledge rather than going on experience.

You want to come across like you are well versed on the company and that bringing you on board would be an asset.

Companies like people who take time to find out what they are all about, it makes them seem tenacious. If you do land an interview with this cover letter, the information will come in handy.

This letter needs to be formatted properly like a cover letter with your name and address in the upper right handed corner. The business name and address and date should be to the left hand side.

The letter should be addressed to the person named in the ad or with a “Dear Sir/Madam” salutation.

It is always best to use a person’s name if available, as it makes the letter seem more professional.

First Paragraph

The first paragraph should detail where you saw the advertisement and your interest. Be sure to point out any awards that you have received that can help you to stand out in the crowd.

You don’t want to repeat information that may be on the resume, but it is acceptable to reference the resume in parts.

If you have received and scholarships, this may help show that you are a viable candidate for the position.

Internships Are Highly Competitive

Internships are highly competitive, especially with the bigger and better companies. You want to make sure there are no spelling and grammar errors, as this could be a real turn off for prospective employers.

Try to make the letter both perfect from the format to the writing style. Each cover letter should be specific for each position.

Since you may apply to different industries, you don’t want the letter to come across as a typical form letter.

Tailor each resume to the specific company you are applying to. End with a formal closing and be sure to notate the attachment of the resume after the closing signature.

Attn: Mr. Calvert

Dear Mr. Calvert:

I am applying for the Scientific Research position that was listed at the Columbia High School Career Center.

As you can see from my resume, which I have attached for your review, I have a great deal of experience working in both chemistry and geology.

I have had both indoor and outdoor experience in this field and feel I would be an asset to your research department.

I know my way around a lab and have completed many studies dealing with chemical reactions and have observed specimens using a microscope. I enjoy chemistry and it is something I am looking into making a full-time career.

While I don’t have any formal job training in this field, I did have the opportunity to work as an intern last fall at Blendon Woods in Westerville, Ohio.

I was the conservation assistant and helped to conduct outdoor experiments and research to help the park preserve their wildlife.

With the Willow Company’s dynamic reputation in preserving the wildlife and my previous experience in this field, I feel I am perfect for this internship. I feel my desire to learn and my previous experience would be an asset to your company.

By having an internship with your company, this would provide me the opportunity to expand my research skills.

If you feel my qualifications are a good match for your program, I would love to schedule a time to sit down and discuss this further. I am hopeful I get the opportunity to speak with you further.

Sincerely,

Lee Thomas
